The Wi-Fi Detective from StarTech.com Finds Wi-Fi Hotspots for Mobile Users

New Pocket-Sized Wi-Fi Finder Provides Wireless Network Users with Information About Available Hotspots

StarTech.com announced the launch of the Wi-Fi Detective.  This product will save mobile Internet users, such as business travelers and students, time and effort by allowing them to locate accessible Wi-Fi networks, using a compact, portable device. The Wi-Fi Detective is battery powered and features an LCD display that can be used to locate available network hotspots, while identifying vital information such as security protocols, signal strength and more.

Intended to help Wi-Fi users to identify available wireless networks by name and status, the Wi-Fi Detective can help save the time needed to locate suitable network hotspots.  “It can be a frustrating and time consuming process, trying to find a network connection by trial and error”, says John Mardinly, Product Manager for StarTech.com, referring to conventional methods of finding a Wi-Fi network. “Typically, a notebook user would have to unpack and set up their computer in an attempt to find an open network with enough signal strength to achieve a proper connection. In a lot of cases, you’ll end up repeating this step several times before finding a usable connection elsewhere.  With this device, you’ll have instant access to the information you need, without having to go through the hassle of unpacking your notebook.”

The Wi-Fi Detective features a lightweight, pocket-sized design that fits in a notebook carrying bag, and is cased in a durable plastic frame designed to withstand the normal wear and tear that hand held devices normally encounter.

The Wi-Fi Detective also offers the following features and benefits:

  • Li-Polymer battery powered – can be recharged using a standard USB connection to a powered computer
  • Can locate 802.11b and 802.11g networks
  • LCD display indicates wireless signal strength, associated security protocols, operating channel and SSI
  • Light and compact: weighs only 30g (1.05 oz.) with dimensions of 91 x 28.5 x 14mm (3.6 x 1.12 x 0.55”)
