Brightcove Teams Up with BitTorrent to Distribute Full-Screen Internet Video

Using the latest version of Adobe Flash

"The industry is ready for the next major leap in the evolution of internet TV," said Jeremy Allaire, Chairman and CEO of Brightcove, "and that is seamlessly extending from short video clips on sites into full-length programs and movies delivered via the internet to PCs.” Allaire was speaking as Brightcove announced that it is teaming up with BitTorrent to distribute full-screen video using the latest version of Adobe Flash.

“In the last two years," Allaire continued, "Internet TV has transformed the web by bringing the storytelling power of video directly into sites, but contextual and viral video clips are only the beginning.”

Brightcove Show will use the new BitTorrent Delivery Network Accelerator in conjunction with the Limelight Networks content delivery network to ensure a high-quality experience for consumers. Brightcove will be adding other new delivery technologies into the Brightcove Show service over time.

Brightcove is the first video service to use BitTorrent's DNA.

“The combination of Brightcove Show with BitTorrent DNA will let content owners stream direct-to-consumer video programming in a full-screen, broadcast-quality format with profound economic efficiencies and a dramatically better user experience,” said Ashwin Navin, the president and co-founder of BitTorrent.

BitTorrent DNA aims to provide efficient delivery of standard HTTP media streams over a secure peer network. Media assets can be enabled for distribution using BitTorrent DNA by including a small JavaScript library and tagging the objects intended for acceleration.

Brightcove Show is available now through a pilot program to selected customers, Allaire noted.. The company plans to launch the product for general availability in 2008.
